Children at Our Partner Schools Learn About Traditional Trades With Guest Musician Sam Barrett

Folk and Country singer Serious Sam Barrett spent time at three schools recently as part of our programme of support for the region’s primary schools.

 He delivered a workshop which included children joining in with sea shanties and traditional songs that have been passed down from one generation to the next. As well as talking about how music played a part in coal mining, woollen mills and farming, Sam introduced the main instruments he uses - a 12-string guitar, banjo, and mandolin.

 Children sang and clapped along then had the chance to ask Sam about his career, his music and his instruments.

 “Sam’s songs and workshop went down really well with children in Selby, Slingsby and Gillamoor. As well as covering loads of history of the industrial revolution, and knowledge of folk music and instruments, children were able to put themselves in the shoes of children working in traditional trades in the county.”
