What we’re teaching this term

From Selby to Scarborough, York to Middlesbrough, and across Ryedale, our subsidised music programme is reaching thousands of children every week.

Here’s a snapshot of what children are learning in their weekly music lessons this term in partnership with Sing Education

  • Nursery and Reception pupils are exploring music through feeling and describing and responding to different sounds. They’re also building their ensemble skills by singing and playing instruments together.

  • In Key Stage 1, pupils have been creating and performing with a focus on musical theatre.

  • Year 3 and 4 students have been studying classical music and Year 5 and 6 have been working on their own composition projects.

We've also offered schools the option of whole-class instrumental tutoring (in recorder or ukulele). In the past academic year, 15 schools have taken up this opportunity. Feedback from the children we work with shows that they really value the opportunity to play a variety of musical instruments so it's great to see schools take up the opportunity to teach these optional modules!

Latest teacher training

In the latest training session for all our teachers the theme was ‘Performing and Ensemble skills’. As well as covering upcoming repertoire from summer Schemes of Work, they also focussed on how to achieve a high quality of ‘rehearsal’ feel in music lessons and how to teach ensemble work effectively across Key Stage 1 and 2. They  brushed up on Kodaly musicianship skills, with a particular focus on using singing names and hand signs, and built this into a performance of a Bach Chorale using Kodaly singing names! Sing Education also ran a ‘Teaching Toolkit’ session focussing on an aspect of effective behaviour management, and how to achieve confident and impactful communication whilst working in a school setting.

We are proud of the amount of work that is being put in by both our teachers and pupils – and we are excited to see these grow in the months ahead!
