Easter Extravaganza!

Over the Easter break we ran our second holiday clubs at St George’s RC Primary School, Scarborough and Barwic Parade Community Primary School, Selby.  These clubs were supported by North Yorkshire’s Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme which meant that in addition to free music sessions the children were provided with free breakfast, lunch and snacks. We wanted to make sure they didn’t leave the day hungry!

At both clubs there was a variety of musical workshops and craft activities which everyone had a chance to participate in. These included drumming, DJ skills and folk music. There was also lots of opportunity for craft activities throughout the day with groups making their own colourful guitars and bells.

We asked both groups what they had learnt with feedback including “I learnt how to change the base on DJ equipment” and “that music comes from the heart”

Towards the end of the Easter break we spent two days with our Ryedale Primary choir where we started to learn the new commissions for the Ryedale Festival Community Song Cycle.

The group were lucky enough to have a visit from mezzo-soprano Victoria Simmonds who performed a piece to the group with different hats on to represent each character.  We then talked about posture and got to decorate our own crowns.  On the Friday we learnt more about technique and talked about how the accompanying instruments work. This came to life in the afternoon when the group learnt how an organ works by building it themselves. This was then showcased to parents and carers in an end of day performance. Parent feedback included “the girls loved it!!” and “my child’s confidence has grown a lot”
